HFEA / Nuffield Council

Two of the most significant bodies in the UK involved with the monitoring and regulation of bioethical issues are the Nuffield Council on Bioethics and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority is the UK’s independent regulator overseeing safe and appropriate practice in fertility treatment and embryo research.

The authority licences and monitor centres carrying out IVF, donor insemination and human embryo research. It also provides a range of detailed information for patients, professionals and Government.

The Nuffield Council on Bioethics examines ethical issues raised by new developments in biology and medicine. Established by the Nuffield Foundation in 1991, the Council is an independent body, funded jointly by the Foundation, the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust.

The Council has achieved an international reputation for addressing public concerns, and providing independent advice to assist policy makers and stimulate debate in bioethics.
