Infertility: Focus on the Medical and Legal Outcomes of Negligence
Wednesday January 19th 2011 at 4.30pm
A discussion introduced by William Ledger - Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Sheffield's Medical School, Head of Royal Hallamshire Hospital's Centre for Reproductive Medicine and Fertility, and coeditor of The Fallopian Tube in Infertility and IVF Practice and Reproductive Ageing in Older Women.
Infertility or
reduced fertility can feature in claims for negligence in a variety of ways. A
medical malpractice claim can arise out of the fertility treatment itself, or
from errors made in connection with that treatment, such as wrongful destruction
or mixing up of gametes. There can also be claims for infertility or reduced
fertility caused through unrelated medical malpractice, such as late diagnosis
of cancer, necessitating chemotherapy which will make the patient infertile, or
a failure to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy leading to rupture of the fallopian
tube.
In all such
claims, complex arguments on causation can be key. At this event, Professor
Ledger, will discuss the way in which negligence claims may arise, and his
experience of dealing with them.
