Celebrating the Body is a series of debates, symposia and publications for 2009. The series explores ways in which technology helps us enjoy embodied lives, through and despite our frailties. Symposia will address issues such as facial surgery and global organ trafficking.

The face; the readable manifestation of our character; the centre of attention and our senses. Facial surgery is complex dealing with delicate skin and bones, nerves and blood vessels. New advances like facial transplantation are experimental with serious physical risks and unknown psychological outcomes. But what can facial surgery truly achieve today? What are the ethical dilemmas posed by this innovation and what are the psychological hazards of meddling with identity?

The global human organ trade, politely known as “transplant tourism”, sets in motion a circulation of organs which flows from South to North; from the third world to the first; from the poor to the rich, from female to male bodies.
